Edwin D. Carlson

Ed Carlson founded Measurement Strategies Group LLC in 2014 following his retirement from ExxonMobil Research and Engineering after more than 33 years.  Before leaving, he was ExxonMobil's senior custody transfer measurement advisor for all the downstream, midstream, and chemicals companies.  He had worldwide responsibility for their measurement controls system and advised both plant and senior management on problems, strategies, and technology.


Ed also directly assisted terminals, refineries, and chemical plants all over the world, identify and improve their oil loss results.  He has worked on measurement and loss issues at all stages of the process, from crude lifting terminals and VLCCs, through pipelines and refineries, all the way to customer issues.  He also led the team that developed and rolled-out the consolidated measurement manual for the manufacturing and transportation portion of ExxonMobil worldwide. 


He has conducted hundreds of training courses on measurement, oil loss and other topics all over the world.  ExxonMobil has awarded Ed numerous awards and commendations over the years.


Prior to his involvement in measurement, Ed worked in many engineering roles including process development and design, technology evaluation and competitor analysis, and environmental engineering.  He holds 3 U.S. patents in ExxonMobil's Gas-to-Liquids technology and in desalting. 


Active in the American Petroleum Institute (API) and ISO petroleum measurement standards committees, Ed is a past chair of both the API Committee on Petroleum Measurement and ISO TC28/SC2 Petroleum Measurement.  He has also held numerous API subcommittee and drafting group chairs, most recently API MPMS 4.8 Prover Operations.  He has received the API's Certificate of Appreciation, the Chester W. Ochsner Award, and 2 Citations for Service. 


Ed has a M.S. in Chemical Engineering and a B.A. in Biology.
